Science vs. The Quran: Exploring Harmony and Differences

A Conflict Between Science and the Quran: Where the Conflict Begins and Ends

There have always been tension and at the same time love between subjects of study like science and religion, science and the Qur’an, and all the sciences that treat this or that religion. While science classifies and presents facts, theories, experimental evidence, and conclusions about the physical universe that surrounds us, the Quran itself is intended for a more concerned and devoted audience. It, most of the time, incorporates the belief systems and their ethics about the cosmos, life and the purpose of human beings in it. This blog post, therefore, discusses science and the Quran and goes on to suggest harmony and differences between them.

1. Science and the Scientific Method

The scope of science consists of observing, hypothesizing, experimenting and concluding. It has limitation, however, as it concerns only the physical earthen realm and the living beings in it, where word or phenomena can be explained only through theories that can be verified or falsified. In the learning of science and its principles, one must also accept the fact that all scientific theories are only historical since those theories are all based on the present level of evidence, which may be insufficient.

Because the scientific method is rooted in evidence, there is always room for doubt. It advocates for the correction of the norms believed to be true in order to reveal the fact. However, at this point ‘science’ all but withdraws from the debate on the nature of existence and the essence of humanity and concentrates solely on what can be quantified.

 2. The Quran’s Approach to Knowledge and the Universe

The Qur’an is Islam’s foremost holy book and details numerous aspects of a person’s life even including moral and spiritual values. It was revealed more than fourteen centuries ago and has lines which talk of the galaxies, the process of creation and, the position of humankind in the process. It is true to state that the Quran cannot be considered in the category of books which are purely scientific, yet it encourages all to seek knowledge and wonders of nature.
