The History of America: A Journey Through Centuries

A Comprehensive Outline - The Chronology of America’s History

It is as multifaceted as it is interesting - the story of people who inhabited this continent, their European counterparts who conquered and colonized it, forgetting the revolution and how the wheel of civilization is always in motion. America is a perfect mix of many elements and here are the major parts of it, presenting the history of America from the time of the native indians to a great power in the world.

Ancient America: Cultures and Societies before the Arrival of Europeans

Way before the advent of Europeans in America, it was already inhabited by different mutinous clans possessing complex customs, religion and civilization. The land was even populated, way back from the Iroquois Confederation in the North eastern part that still practices democracy to the Pueblo dwellers in the South west who have advanced traditional farming ways in irrigation and terraces. Most of these societies lived for many centuries because of their strong bond with the land. This way of life, which the peoples of the Americas embraced throughout history, as well as in contemporary times, has defined America in many ways.

European Discovery and Settlement

Christopher Columbus landed in the West Indes in 1492, triggering the events of the European Discovery of the Americas. Within the next one hundred years, Spain, France, and England founded colonies. Spain conquered and colonized most of the current Southwestern U.S. and Florida while the other European nation, France traded in the Northern regions. The British colonies expanded across the Eastern shores of the continent creating thirteen colonies that would later metamorphose into the United States. The emerging colonies led to numerous confrontations with the native inhabitants who fought to protect their territories and way of life from the incoming settlers.

The Road to Revolution

Paradoxically, the century of the eighteenth after the settlement and independence of the colonies was also marked by numerous tensions. The British colonies flourished, but the conflicts with the mother country were growing more and more within the society, and then in the other countries, and they protested the tyranny of the British state’s growth, which included oppression and taxation without representation.  American revolutionists had their interests shaped, on these very issues, by the Enlightenment – time liberated, republics self-governing.
